HIV/AIDS in 10 Blocks of Aligarh and Hathras Districts

This is a very big and demanding project.  Since it is 10 blocks, and we every month need to go to all the blocks at least once, it means that we have a lot of work to do.  In every block we have 3 staff members, and these people are responsible to see that all the people know when a camp is going to be held, that the people are motivated for testing etc.

During 2007 it was a total of 528 big and small awareness camps in all these blocks, and a total of 32.137 people attended these meetings.  It was a total of 91 combines awareness and testing camps, and we took 4818 HIV blood tests, and of these it was 13 HIV positive.

The blood tests in the blocks we take with us "home" to Mursan, and run them on the Elisa Reader.  This is a safe and will give the answer faster than a rapid test.

When we "find" a HIV+ patient, we always tell them to come to Mursan, for further testing and counselling.  Most of the people will come, at least 99% will come.  They are also told to come to the support group, and most will do this also. Now it is so many, that we in the near future probably will have to devide in two.

Re-Training / Refresher course for TBA's

TBA's means Traditional Birth Attendants.   From 1990 to 2002 we trained 10.226 TBA's.  They lived in 17 blocks of Aligarh and Hathras Districts.  By the time we stopped the training we had also given about 6000 of them Re-Training.

This training are so important, because it is probably many more HIV+ women who are delivering babies in the vilages than we know about.  The TBA's must know how to protect themselves, in case they have a HIV+ case.

During 2007 we gave Re-Training to 273 women, so by December 31st. 2007 we had given re-Training to a total of 7652 of all the 10.226 women we have been given training to.

Also thewomen attending Re-Training are getting a certificate,a nd we clearly see that the people in the villages prefer to send for these women.  99% of these women have never gone to school, so they cannot read and write.  It is therefore important to have the training in a simple manner, so they can understand, use pictures etc.

Methodist Rural Public Health Program

The HIV/AIDS Projects in Mursan started during 2003.  It was started because we heard thru the news papers, TV etc. that it was a lot of infected people, and especially around Mathura and the refinary, it was a lot.

In Aligarh and Hathras Districts we have in several years been running a TBA's training project.  It was a very activ project from 1990 to 2002, and by that time we had trained 10.226 women.  We started early with awareness among these women, as  I went on a course rather early, and so we implemented some hours with HIV/AIDS also  in the TBA's Training.  This project was started in 17 Blocks, but since NORAD stopped some of the funding, we had to stop 7 of the blocks in 2002.  Since then we have been running the project in 10 blocks, and these 10 blocks are the blocks we have converted into HIV/AIDS project.

In the beginning it was not easy, as even the Indian Government refused to admitt that it was HIV+ people in the country.  The first time we heard about it, it was said that some foreign student had come, had been tested and found HIV+.  In August 2004 the support group was started up, in March-April 2005 the Dhaba project was a fact, and in April 2007 the Vrindaban part was also started up.  In this program we have also taken as a part the work among the widows.
